POPCORN VIDEO

POPCORN TEXT

Popcorn, the perfect snack for a movie or really anytime. Who knew that this little dried-up corn kernel would pop open into this edible, light, and healthy treat after being put to some heat.

Historians have debated for years where exactly popcorn originated but they do know that it was discovered in one of the Americas.

Many believe that the Native Americans discovered popcorn first but archaeologists have found fossil traces of popcorn in Mexico

Popcorn was not always used as a snack during the day or a baseball game or the movies because some colonist would actually eat it for breakfast with cream and sugar, like we would do now with our modern day cereal.

During the 1890’s popcorn became extremely popular, especially since it was the great depression and so cheap! Vendors would roll their street cart style popping machines and go where ever the crowd was.

They would go to parks and fairs and of course the people would buy it because of its low price people could afford it. Pretty much the popcorn business took off.

Popcorn rose to fame during World War II when sugar was being sent off to the troops which left little for candy production. During that time Americans ate three times more popcorn.

But as the war ended and television started to make a rise the popcorn industry saw a decline. Many people weren’t going to the movies anymore but a partnership between Coca-Cola and Morton Salt and advertising in individual companies made the idea of home popping a success in the 1950s.

In the 1980s microwave popcorn became the new sensation and now the average American eats around 68 quarts of pop corn a year.

Popcorn is still a huge staple in the country and is sold at the movies, grocery stores, and fairs. And there are still little vendors trying to make some money.

Like at Lyndon State College the Society of Professional Journalists have been selling popcorn at the weekly movies at the school for this year. It has been the clubs constant form of fundraising for trips to national journalism conferences.

Kevin Lessard who is currently the student government association representative for the club makes the popcorn every week. He makes around 3 scoops of popcorn. He adds this buttery flavored liquid to get the yellow color and flavor that people want.

The bags of popcorn sell for a dollar and 50 cents for smaller bags and the club is thinking about maybe starting to sell drinks at the movies.

Rock Climbing Video!

Rock Climbing!

Even though rock climbing at a rock wall isn’t as scary as scaling the side of a mountain many people over the course of history have done just that.

Rock climbing became more popular when people started to climb and be successful at it which was very publicized around the end of the 1800’s. There were over 200 small climbing clubs by 1930.

That is when rock climbing started to become a recreational sport and gear and equipment started to be made. Over time safer techniques were formed and mastered.

Nowadays “free climbing” is one of the most popular forms of rock climbing. It is when the climber will climb rocks but will only hold on to the rocks natural groves and formations only using gear for protection and not for helping the upward movement.

Rock climbing takes a lot of concentration. A climber tests his or her physical strengths and balance while up many feet in the air.

Here on the Lyndon State College campus there is a rock wall that is open every night from six to nine for people who want to know what the sport is all about.

Some basics that climbers learn first is all about the equipment that needs to be worn and how it needs to be secure.

Once a person gets harnessed up they learn how belay another person.

Belaying is when a person is at the base of the wall and/or mountain and is roped up to the person climbing so if they fall they wont fall very far which results in the climber not getting injured.

At the rock wall once a person has learned how to belay and is comfortable with it the instructor will let them climb on their own.

Rock climbing is a fun sport and a pretty good workout. The climber really works their leg muscles trying to push off to another grove or nub.

Jake Carlton currently works at the rock wall at Lyndon State College and is a sophomore in the mountain recreation major. He has been climbing for a couple of years now and has climbed some pretty steep mountain sides.

The rock wall at Lyndon State College is a way for him to teach people something that he already loves to do and he hopes to continue rock climbing in the future whether he owns his own gym or if he just continues to outdoor rock climb.

Enjoy!

Schofield Podcast

Schofield Podcast Story

Tyler Schofield…friend….tennis player…rapper.

When Schofield was a young lad, he was inspired by Ying Yang twins and lyrical genius was embedded in his mind.

Originally born Middleboro Mass, his favorite food was his Mac n Cheese and lyrical genius was embedded in his head. When he entered Lyndon State College, he had few things on his mind.

 He wanted to play tennis.

He wanted to get a Television studies degree on the The Production house side of the business. And he wanted to drop hell fire and brimstone on paper with more lyrical genius.

Entering his Junior year of college, he never though that he would be taken seriously in the rap game. Aj Raskin, a friend of many, a true if you will, and a Music Business Industry major, approached him with one goal in mind, spit mad fire on stage.

Schofield was pessimistic about the idea but Schofy was ready to role with the idea.

Critics were harsh, they were determined to bring him down, ripping on his beats, his lyrics, his skin color. After weeks of determination, preparation, observation and communication Schof was ready to put his money where his mic was.

Schof created nine tracks with fresh beats. His manager, Aj Raskin, was extremely high on Schofield and for the feature of “Battle of the Bands :Music Mondays” Schof was to open for nationally known, folk band, Suncooked.

He was extremely scared the night of the show but with the help of his friends he took to the stage, and with DJ Trice the show went on.

“It was cray KEEEEEEEDDDD” said Schofield. When asked if he will ever find the mic on the stage again? He replied “Ah, shit, nah kid, never again.”

Synopsis

For our podcast we will be featuring Tyler Schofield and his debut rap performance Monday night (tonight) for “Battle of the Bands.” Edward or Joe will go to the event and take some natural sound from the concert and take pictures of what happened and how he felt afterwards and so on and so forth. The intended audience is any rap fans and/or LSC bands and performers that are interested in what happens on campus. This is an interesting story because it should be fun and entertaining but it should also show what the performers do and how they feel before they go out and put their talents out there. Whoever goes tonight will most likely do an interview with Tyler about what steps he took beforehand to get ready for his performance and how much time and effort it takes to be prepared for a show. Whoever goes tonight might ask to talk to someone who watched the show and find out how they felt about it and how they thought Tyler did. Hopefully this podcast ends up showing us what happened and is a fun and entertaining.

Atlanta Review!

Hello!

I have "liked" the CBS Atlanta facebook TV show page for a while and I have looked into their website and here's what I think about them.

I feel like they put new stories on their website every day and I have been getting a new post in my news feed about everyday on facebook from them as well.

I liked that on their website you can see which ones have a video attached so if I am more in the mood to watch something than to read it I can just click on the ones with video.

I think that the writing on both Internet sites are very clear and easy to understand.

I do think that the video is a bit more effective than just writing with a picture headline because we can see where it is and what is looks like and it takes the viewer on a kind of journey with the reporter. I feel like video is one of the most effective tools when it comes to telling a story.

I really like the website. There is so much content to view.

I feel like if I lived in Atlanta that this would be a good news resource to have!

STORY FOR SOUND SLIDE!

HELLO AND WELCOME TO THE HUNGOVER SOUND SLIDE!

Abe Hinman is an Lyndon State College junior and he occasionally likes to go to the bar and get a little wasted, which he can do legally because he is now 21, but in the morning when he has no money to go to the diner... what is he supposed to do?

The only logical solution is to make breakfast himself!

It is so much cheaper and yes, it does take a little bit of time out of  your schedule but in the end you will have a great meal that you made yourself!

(NOTE: You need to have these items in your fridge before you get totally slammed at the bar and you need to have a stove! -duh-)

For this hungover extravaganza we needed the following items:

Bacon
Eggs
Pancake mix
Water (For the pancakes)
Pans (To cook with)
Measuring cups
Cheese (Optional)

Now that we had all of our items together it was time to wake Abram up, which he was not to complacent about. He finally woke up and remembered that we had a project to do.

He put on his pants and got out of his room to make himself a nice breakfast burrito which is a pancake with bacon and eggs on top and kind of just rolled all together.

We have found in our experience with hangovers and drinking that grease is really the best and most effective way to feel better. Bacon is greasy and most definitely delicious.

Eggs also provide the hungover human with much needed protein. And the pancake is the carb factor that will soak up all that extra alcohol in your system.

We would like to tell you before hand that Abram cannot really cook, he tries on occasion and usually fails.

Anyway, he makes it through the cooking part of the project pretty well. He did run off at one point to take a shot of vodka just help the hangover.

The end product that he ended up with was actually pretty good. Even though it looked more like a pancake taco-thing instead of a burrito it was still really delicious.

For the project itself we really wanted the sound to flow. This was difficult to do because there weren't very many places to edit the sound without it sounding semi choppy.

The fabulous Jessica Walsh took many photos during this project and we tried to find the ones that really captured the moments the best.

All in all we really like our project and we think it came together pretty well.

Also, we hope that next time you will enjoy the hangover! Now go make yourself a burrito.

Slide Show Synopsis!

Hey everyone!

Our slide show is going to be a little cooking lesson. We are going to teach LSC junior Abe Hinman how to cook himself a great hungover breakfast...which includes eggs, and pancakes. To start our story line we are going to wake him up in his dorm room after a night at the club and make him cook. We will of course have the recorder going the whole time and pictures to show what happened. The pictures through out the process will show what everything looked like. The photos will end up having a nice flow to them. We don't really want the slide show to look choppy and boring. Our goal is to keep the slide show moving and flowing to make it a more entertaining and attention grabbing. Also we plan to edit it down a whole lot to fit into the 2-3 minute time constraint. The intended audience is any hungover college student who wakes up hungover who doesn't have enough change in their pocket to get breakfast at the diner.Students should find this funny and very informative. It also will save them money and they can do it in their pj's! This is an interesting story for that audience because they should be entertained by the reaction we get. Our teams duties will be given out as follows:

Slide shows and Photo Galleries

Hello there!

For this assignment we were asked to find 2 slide shows and 1 photo gallery and figure out how well they work as story telling tools.

The first slide show I found had no sound and it was titled "The Worlds Best Beers." It's the kind of slide show that you have to click through and read what it is all about.

I felt like it was interesting to see what beers made the list and it was very informative about the individual kinds of beers. However I think not having to click through it would have made it easier to look at.

The next slide show had audio and was titled "Human Planet." It was basically pictures that this photographer took around the world and he was narrating through the pictures.

It was very informative and I liked the narrated feel of the slide show.

The photo gallery I chose was one that had photos of the Northeast Kingdom. There were no descriptions with the pictures which was kind of a down fall.

I feel like the slide show with audio did the best job telling the story. It had some natural sound which made me enjoy watching and it helped me understand what was going.

The other slide show was fine, it just wasn't as engaging and made me loose interest more quickly. As for the photo gallery I didn't really feel like it was telling me a story of any kind.

Awkward Podcast!

The podcast is definitely more on the conversational side of things, we think its pretty funny and it is most definitely awkward.

First we made a list of awkward situations that have either happened to us directly or to people we know.to get ideas we went online and looked at sites like "That awkward moment."

After the list was made we tried to narrow it down to just a couple that are worthy of making it to the podcast itself.

When we began recording we thought instead of having music to accompany it we would just sing awkwardly at the beginning and end to make it even more awkward. During the podcast we introduced ourselves in the beginning but after that we didn't really say our names much.

We really tried to keep it more low key and we didn't have very much structure to it and I think that it works for this kind of podcast. Some awkward moments we included were, how do you know which armrest is yours at the movies, facebook creeps, and seeing people that you really don't want to talk to.

During the editing process we really had to cut it down because we had 21 minutes of us talking. So we cut it down to around 6 minutes of good awkward moments and hopefully a lot of funny and really true parts that we think happen to a lot of people.

Well that's really all I can say about the podcast. I really enjoyed the process even though I was unable to figure out how to embed the podcast on my post so I have linked it to the Divshare site and that seems to work when you click on it.

Hope you enjoy listening to our little podcast and I hope you find it as humorous as we all did.

Hopefully that will bring you to it!

Podcast Review

The three podcast I subscribed to were the Raw Food podcast, Americas Test Kitchen and On the Media.

The Raw food Podcast caught my eye because it looked like it was about cooking which I love to do. I liked how the host made the food on the podcast.

I like how I can visualize what shes doing. Its a newer podcast so it only has two episodes but I really liked each one so far! I don't really dislike anything about this podcast.

I love watching Amercas test kitchen on TV so when I saw that they have a podcast I was really excited to listen to it. They take calls and answer questions that people have about cooking.

They also do tastes tests and quality test which I love to know what are the better brands to get.

When I saw the On the Media podcast I thought that it would probably be a good podcast for me to listen too since I want to go into media.

The podcast pretty much consists of a couple hosts discusing "new" news and whats going on in goverment and politics.

I found it very informational and I liked how it made me think about the things that are going on around us even though it did get a little confusing at times. I would go in and out while listening and then not remembering what was being discussed.

I havent put them on my Ipod but I have subcribed to them and I believe I will continue to listen to them!

"Pimp My Blog"

For the "Pimp My Blog" assignment I first played around with design of the blog itself.

I really liked the orange swirl design because after all my blog is called "The Ginger Journalist". Have to get some form of orange on there.

I then changed the color and fonts of the words. I really like purple so as you can see the words you are currently reading are PURPLE! Love it.

I wanted to add some cools things to my blog so I added a picture of myself and I also added a couple different gadgets. I have one gadget for a video blog I love from YouTube, another gadget for news related things, and one for blogs I like to read.

I also added a couple of things about me. This is the process I went through. Hope you all like it!

Hunting Gone Bad

A hunting related shooting has one Vermont man going to court.

Conrad Masse, 76, and Wayne Goff, 58, were bear hunting on Urie Road in Albany when things got out of hand.

They had released two bear hounds out on a track of a bear when Goff and Masse drove to Urie road. Goff then got out of the truck to wait for the bear.

Masse then drove about 550 feet further on the road and got out of the truck to also wait for the bear.

The bear then crossed the road between the two men and Masse fired 3 shots. One hit the bear, the other a tree, and the third bullet went right into Goff.

Goff was taken to North Country Hospital then transported to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center for treatment on his pelvic gunshot wound. He has now been released from the hospital and is in stable condition.

Masse was issued a citation to appear in the Orleans Superior Court on charges of Aggravated Assault. He was also ticketed by Fish and Game for shooting from the road, having a loaded riffle in his car, and not having proper display of permits for the bear hounds.

Blog Critique!!

Hello there!!

OK so I went through some blogs about cooking (because really I'm a foodie at heart) and I found this really cute one.

http://bravetart.com/

The blog is called Brave Tart and it pretty much consist of one baker who makes desert-like items every couple of weeks for her blog and someone photographs it and she has this whole write up about what she made and why she made it.
There are no videos just pictures and recipes and her write ups. I really enjoyed reading through this blog because of the way that she writes. I was looking through her comments that she receives and she really tries to reply back to all of them which I thought was nice. I really don't dislike anything about this blog. I feel like its simple and that's the way it should be. She keeps her thoughts clear and focused and they're easy to read and funny at times.

Well that's it for now I guess!

In Peace,
The Ginger Journo :)

Multimedia URL's

OK so these are my URL's for class. I thought since we were supposed to "like" Fox44 on Facebook I went to check on their website.
http://www.fox44now.com/

Some features I liked about this site is how they told you what stories had videos with them. I don't really like how it looks though. I feel like it could be more eye catching and less cluttered.

Another site I wanted to check out was from the news station that I grew up watching.

http://www.wcax.com/

I feel like the set up is similar to the Fox44 site. They also notify you when a story has a video attached to it. But I still feel like these two sites could be easier to navigate and could look a bit more exciting.
